Winter Escape to Miami

Baby, it’s cold outside! Beat the winter blues and plan an escape to Miami.

Besides lovely weather from October to May, diversity is what makes Miami so wonderful. There are countless ways to enjoy your days in South Florida. Start by embracing an active lifestyle, soaking up the sun, and turning up the Latin tunes. Here are my 5 top things to do:

Nourish your mind, body, and soul. The best way to start your morning in Miami is to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Arrive with a beach blanket or towel at least 15 minutes before actual sunrise time to appreciate the colors in the sky and peaceful sounds of nature. Afterwards, opt to go out for a healthy, early breakfast or get your heart pumping! The bike and walking paths in Miami are very scenic, my favorite being in South Beach. When the trail ends continue along the unpaved way or Ocean Drive to South Pointe Pier. This fishing pier offers magnificent views and continuous activity with passing by boats and cruise ships. There is also a modern playground to keep children entertained.

Take a helicopter ride. I highly recommend experiencing Miami by doors-off helicopter. Last winter I took my first helicopter tour of Miami with FlyNYON and had one of the most exceptional flights of my life thanks to Pilot Luis. FlyNYON regularly offers promotions on their website, such as 50% off, so be sure to subscribe to their e-mail list to receive the latest deals. The photos shown below were taken on my iPhone during midday.

Stroll through Wynwood. The most colorful streets in Miami are found in the buzzing Wynwood district. In recent years the area underwent a complete transformation thanks to graffiti art turning once abandoned warehouses into unique canvases for the public to enjoy. I didn’t appreciate street art until I took the time to properly explore this neighborhood two years ago. Wynwood Walls is a great place to start your self-guided walking tour. Take a short detour to the most famous local bakery, Zak the Baker, which features a nice selection of freshly baked breads, pastries, and coffee. Alternatively, cool off with Instagram worthy Japanese ice cream from Taiyaki NYC Miami or pop into my favorite fast casual lunch joint, Ono Poke Shop. They serve delicious poke bowls: freshly caught, sushi grade fish served with rice or greens and various nutritious toppings.

Be a beach bum. No trip to Miami is complete without a relaxing day at the beach! If you are not staying in a hotel or condominium that offers beach service, consider renting lounge chairs and umbrellas in front of The Miami Beach EDITION. Once you arrive to the beach there’s a hut that is separately operated from the hotel’s hut, but you can order drinks from the hotel beach menu or head to Matador Room for a scrumptious lunch. If you’re being more mindful of your budget, consider packing a cooler with sandwiches from La Sandwicherie and/or healthy snacks from Whole Foods.

Go out for a healthy, early breakfast biking

Enjoy a night out. Go for dinner at Bazaar Mar in Brickell (order the California funnel cake and grilled lobster) or CVI.CHE 105 in South Beach (mixed ceviche platter with lobster). If you’re not very hungry and still want a fun night out, head to The Living Room located in the chic Faena Hotel. It’s a must for specialty cocktails and excellent live music. Be sure to check the weekly entertainment lineup and reserve a table online via their website.
